Two kinds of damage dominate downtown. The first is contact damage from parking structures: ramps built for smaller cars, tight turns against concrete pillars, and the corner of a bumper or a wing finding a wall. Fixed corner glass is what breaks in those. The second is the lot break-in, which nearly always takes the back glass or a quarter pane rather than a door window, because those are the panes nobody sits next to. Either way the replacement has to match the original, since defroster grids, antenna elements, tint bands and mounting points all vary by vehicle.
Because most of this glass is bonded rather than clipped, the job carries a cure period, and downtown is one of the few places where that is not a nuisance. A car in a deck near Raymond Boulevard is going nowhere until the end of the day anyway. We cut out the old pane and adhesive, clean and prime the aperture, bed the new glass, reconnect any heating circuit and vacuum the cabin thoroughly, then leave a safe drive-away time that has usually passed by the time you come down. The deck is the detail worth planning around. Older downtown structures have clearance bars and low ceilings a service van cannot pass, and a bay against a wall may not give a tech room to work at the rear of the car. So before anything is dispatched we want the level, the space and the height limit posted at the entrance. Surface lots off Raymond Boulevard are simpler and usually the better option when the choice exists. If neither works, Broad Street north to Oraton Street is ten minutes and the light rail brings you back into the middle of downtown, which for a job with a cure period is often the least disruptive route anyway. Either way, we confirm access before a tech leaves the shop rather than after he arrives.
