Forest Hill is unusual for Newark in one practical way: people here have driveways. Detached garages, a gravel apron behind the house, a flat spot beside the porch. The other thing about these streets is the trees. Big old ones, planted when the district was laid out, arching over Elwood Avenue and the parkways. They are the reason the neighborhood looks the way it does, and they are also why we see glass damage that has nothing to do with the road: limbs coming down in a nor'easter, seed pods and acorns through the autumn, and sap that bakes onto a windshield until the wipers chatter across it. Branch Brook Park runs along the southern edge, and during the cherry blossom weeks in April the streets nearest the park fill with visitor cars that residents have to work around. The Belleville line sits at the top of the neighborhood by the Second River, so a good deal of daily driving crosses in and out of another town without anyone thinking about it.

The damage pattern here leans seasonal rather than urban. Winter is the worst stretch: a car left out overnight under trees wakes up under a sheet of ice, somebody scrapes it with whatever was in the trunk, and a chip that had been sitting quietly since summer opens into a crack across the passenger side.
