Driving a cracked windshield from Jersey City to Newark and back eats most of a morning, so nearly everything we do over there is mobile. The van loads the correct glass for your year and model before it leaves Oraton Street, crosses on Routes 1 and 9, and the work happens wherever the car is parked. A windshield is an hour to ninety minutes of installation, and then the urethane needs its cure time, which passes quite happily while the car sits in the same space it was going to occupy anyway.
Parking is the variable that decides how a Jersey City job goes. A driveway in Bergen-Lafayette or a surface lot behind an office is straightforward. A residential permit space on a narrow street up in the Heights is workable as long as there is room to open the doors and stand beside the car. A tight underground garage sometimes is not, and we would rather establish that on the phone than send a tech across the Skyway to find out. Kennedy Boulevard runs the length of the city north to south and Newark Avenue cuts across it toward Journal Square, which is where much of the traffic in the middle of Jersey City ends up. The Turnpike Extension and Routes 1 and 9 handle the through traffic, with the Pulaski Skyway carrying the direct line toward Newark over the meadows. Parking ranges from permit-only residential blocks with nothing to spare, to structured garages under the newer towers, to surface lots in the older industrial pockets. PATH stations at Journal Square, Grove Street and Exchange Place mean a lot of cars here are commuter cars that only really move at weekends.

The Skyway and the Turnpike Extension are where most Jersey City windshields get hit. Both are elevated, both have steel decking and open joints in stretches, and both carry heavy trucks that pick up and fling whatever is loose. A stone off that deck arrives with real energy behind it. At street level the causes are the usual dense-city ones: cars parked bumper to bumper on permit blocks take door strikes and mirror hits, construction sites shed grit that scratches glass under the wipers, and vehicles left in one space all week are the ones that lose a side window overnight. A cold snap then runs every existing chip into a crack.
Most people here book the van, but if you want to bring the car, Routes 1 and 9 west over the Skyway into Newark is the direct line, then north on McCarter Highway and off toward Bloomfield Avenue, with Oraton Street a few blocks west of Broadway. Twenty to thirty minutes is realistic depending on the crossing. We are at 23 Oraton Street, Monday to Saturday, eight until six. We regularly run to the Journal Square, Bergen-Lafayette, Greenville and downtown areas, and up into the Heights when there is somewhere workable to park. If you are further north or east, call and ask rather than assuming. A travel charge may apply at that distance, and if it does you will hear the figure before we schedule anything.
Not for us, as long as the car stays legal where it is for the length of the job and the cure time afterwards. We work beside the vehicle in its space. What we do need is enough room to open the doors fully and get along the side of the glass, which a standard street space usually gives us on a quieter block.
For a windshield we reschedule or move it into the shop, because urethane needs dry conditions to reach full strength and we are not going to shortcut that.
