Everything in Weequahic sits between two heavy roads. The Garden State Parkway runs up the eastern side of the park, I-78 crosses the bottom of the neighborhood toward the airport, and the streets in between carry traffic that is either heading for one of them or has just come off. Glass pays for that arrangement. A windshield on a car commuting from Chancellor Avenue to the Parkway every morning takes stone strikes at a rate a car staying on city streets never will, and most of the chips we fill from this neighborhood were collected within a mile of home.
The distance from our shop makes the van the sensible default. We load the glass for your specific vehicle, come down, and do the work where the car is parked, which for a lot of Weequahic addresses means a driveway or a residential block with room to work beside it. If the damage is still a chip rather than a crack, that is around half an hour and frequently nothing out of pocket with comprehensive coverage, and it is worth catching before a February morning turns it into a full replacement.
Weequahic Park sets the shape of the neighborhood, with Elizabeth Avenue running along one side and the Parkway along the other. Chancellor Avenue and Lyons Avenue are the main east-west routes, Bergen Street heads north toward the middle of the city, and the residential grid between them mixes older single-families, two-families and apartment blocks. Frelinghuysen Avenue on the eastern edge is industrial and carries truck traffic toward the airport and the port, while I-78 crosses just south of the park. Newark Liberty is close enough that a fair number of people here leave a car parked for a week at a time while they work a route out of the airport, and a car that sits is a car that gets found.

Highway grit leads the list, and it arrives from three directions: the Parkway ramps to the east, I-78 to the south, and the truck route up Frelinghuysen Avenue toward the port. All three feed onto local streets, so gravel gets carried into the neighborhood and thrown about by ordinary traffic. Second is heat and cold on cars parked in the open around the park, with nothing to shade them in July and nothing to shelter them in January; that swing finishes off chips that would have survived in a garage. Third is the ordinary break-in, most common on the blocks where vehicles go unmoved for days at a stretch.
The direct run is Elizabeth Avenue or Bergen Street north into downtown, then Broad Street through the middle of the city and onto Broadway; Oraton Street is off it and we are at number 23. That is around twenty minutes, more in the evening. Some drivers prefer the Parkway north to I-280 east, which is faster when the surface streets are jammed.
