Nowhere in Newark is harder on parked glass than the Ironbound, and the reason is the mix. A residential neighborhood of narrow streets sits directly against a working port, so the same block carries family cars, restaurant delivery vans and container trucks headed for Doremus Avenue. Whatever a truck tire picks up on the Truck Route gets thrown at whatever is behind it. Add a street grid that fills to the last inch by early evening and you have a steady supply of chipped windshields and clipped door glass.
Getting the car out of here for repairs is a problem of its own, which is why more Ironbound jobs go mobile than anywhere else we cover. Where the job really needs the shop, McCarter Highway puts you on Oraton Street in about a quarter of an hour, which is often faster than finding a second parking space when you get back.
Ferry Street is the spine, and it behaves like a main street in a much older city: two lanes that work as one because of the double-parking, restaurant deliveries at all hours, and drivers stopping for bread with the hazards on. Wilson Avenue runs the other way toward the port, carrying the heavy traffic. Raymond Boulevard and McCarter Highway close the neighborhood off to the north and west, Routes 1 and 9 to the east, and Penn Station sits at the corner of it all feeding commuters onto the PATH and the buses. Independence Park gives the middle of the neighborhood some air, and the streets around it are where residents actually stand a chance of parking. Port traffic is the first cause. Loose gravel and broken asphalt around the industrial approaches get flung by container trucks, and a windshield takes those hits at exactly the wrong angle. Construction is the second: the Ironbound has been rebuilding for years, and steel road plates laid over utility trenches make a bang that travels straight through the glass. Proximity is the third. Cars parked this tightly get doors swung into them, mirrors folded by passing vans, and quarter glass cracked by a delivery driver misjudging a gap. And because the neighborhood empties toward the station every morning, vehicles sit unattended all day in sight of a busy street, which is when back windows disappear.
The straightforward route is McCarter Highway. Pick up Route 21 north from Raymond Boulevard, stay on it past the downtown exits, then come off toward Bloomfield Avenue; Broadway is a few blocks west and Oraton Street runs off it, with the shop at number 23. Give it twelve to fifteen minutes outside rush hour, longer when the Ferry Street end is backed up. Usually, but be honest with us about the space when you book. We need enough clearance to open the doors and stand at the side of the vehicle, and for a windshield we need to get along the full length of the glass. If the car is truly hemmed in, the simplest fix is moving it two blocks to a wider street and telling us where it went.
